      <image:title>Marseille</image:title>
<image:caption>The travel writer Basil Woon wrote From Deauville to Monte Carlo: A Guide to the Gay World of France in 1929. In it he warned respectable readers that they should on no account visit France’s second city. “Thieves, cut-throats and other undesirables throng the narrow alleys and sisters of scarlet sit in the doorways of their places of business, catching you by the sleeve as you pass by. The dregs of the world are here unsifted … Marseille is the world’s wickedest port.” * Gay meant something different back then, and indeed just like that word Marseille has undergone something of a makeover; to put it another way, it has been trying to go straight, but not in a gay sense. Clear, n'est ce pas?</image:caption>

<image:title>Mythology and literature in Co. Louth and Co. Down - Climbing Slieve Gullion</image:title>
<image:caption>When Ireland's share of molten lava was cooling down 60 million years ago a little bit plopped up - just like boiling custard – and stayed like that. South Armagh was left with a central mountain, Slieve Gullion, surrounded by a ring of smaller mountains. This ‘ring dyke system’ is now required viewing for geologists from around Europe — it's one of the prime examples of the form. Before the geologists arrived, Slieve Gullion had already played host to witches, Ulster heroes and fleeing saints. This is the land of Tain Bó Cuailgne, Fionn MacCumhaill and the old hag Calliagh Berra. The route rises quickly from Slieve Gullion Courtyard Centre through deciduous woodland and out onto open heathland. A well worn turf path rises steeply towards a straightforward hill-walk to the height of Slieve Gullion at 573 metres with little scrambling involved. A stone cairn built during the Victorian era marks the summit, atop a huge burial chamber constructed by Neolithic Armagh locals. Both great cairn builders, the Victorians and the Neolithics, separated by some 3000 years. This vantage point gives you the geologist’s view of the rest of the Ring, and the poet’s view of the Mourne Mountains sweeping down to the Sea. Of course if it’s a fine soft day bucketing down - with the only view being your hand in front of your face - you could content yourself with searching for the slowest growing things on Planet Earth, lichens. The most common, looking like white splodges on the granite boulders, are Dog’s Tooth lichens. But look carefully and you might see specimens from the genus Haematomma – the Blood Drop lichens. Pale green with blood red drops, these grow about a tenth of an inch in a hundred years. The summit ridge leads down to Calliagh Berra’s Lough. Needless to say several legends attach to this lake. The warrior Fionn MacCumhail was lured into the pool, emerging as a wizened, white-haired old man. His friends dug into the cairn on Slieve Gullion to find Calliagh Berra, the witch who caused the enchantment. She restored Fionn, but his former head of red hair remained white. No wonder CS Lewis wandered these mountains looking for inspiration. This may well be "the garden and magic tree which lie to the west of Narnia, at the end of the blue lake." [The above piece was published in the Irish Times]</image:caption>

      <image:title>Dublin</image:title>
<image:caption>Dvblinia — Ain't nothing like a Dane The story of Dublin's Viking origins are unravelled at the Dvblinia Heritage Centre, situated in the former Synod Hall of the Church of Ireland. The gist of the story — and the Vikings were renowned for being only interested in gist — goes something like this: From the 830s large bands of Norsemen landed in Ireland, founding settlements such as Dubh Linn, Wexford, Waterford But, as is often the case, tribal fighting soon broke out. A sizable force of Danes joined with local Irish in a putsch against the Vikings. However, the men from the far North scored a fine away-win, with the two brothers Olaf the White and Ivar the Boneless subsequently turning Dublin into a major slaving centre. White and Boneless, despite sounding like an accountancy firm, then devised a cunning plan. In a complete reversal of historical template, our plucky Dane duo plotted to attack the island to the east, Britannia. But events, dear boy, events. Raiding parties would regularly hit Britain — business continued. However, the invaders were becoming increasingly embroiled in Ireland’s own personal wars. By the end of the 10th century they were turning on each other, becoming involved in widespread factional fighting. The final scene came in 1014 at Clontarf: Irish fought Irish, with Viking mercenaries on both sides. The Munster leader Brian Boru met forces led by the King of Leinster, Máel Mórda mac Murchada. Viking factions included mercenaries from Dublin and the Orkney Islands led by Sigtrygg the Squint-Eyed (really). It ended in a rout of the Máel Mórda's forces, but Brian Boru was killed by Norsemen fleeing the battle who stumbled on his tent. Viking influence in Irish affairs thereafter diminished, and Ireland returned to a fractious status quo between many small, separate kingdoms. But other visitors were waiting just across the Irish Sea . . . .</image:caption>

<image:caption>Myths such as the blood-sucking Dracula occur with some regularity throughout the world. This, it is argued, is a result of Neanderthals being on the planet at the same time as Homo sapiens. And also, of course, the fact that real blood-sucking bats do exist. As well as real spooky things.</image:caption>
